Allied Members are not Architects, but are professionals in related fields, who collaborate with and support Architects in the creation of the built environment.

>In California the requirements can be considered more flexible than other jurisdictions.  It’s important to be familiar with the California requirements and stay updated via the California Architects Board website and publications.     

There are three aspects of licensure requirements:  education, experience and examination.  Every State/Jurisdiction will set its own requirements for these three areas.  Outlined below is a brief summary of these California requirements:

  • Eight years of post-secondary education and/or work experience as evaluated by the Board (including at least one year of work experience under the direct supervision of an architect licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction or two years of work experience under the direct supervision of an architect registered in a Canadian province)
  • Completion of the Comprehensive Intern Development Program (CIDP) and the Intern Development Program (IDP)
  • Successful completion of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)
  • Successful completion of the California Supplemental Examination (CSE)

Keep in mind that there are possible backgrounds, experience and/or education that may not be discussed on the California Architects Board website, in which case the candidate should contact the Board directly to learn how licensure requirements apply to their situation. 

To start the Licensure Process and become a candidate for licensure, you must first submit to the Board:

  • Effective July 1, 2008, candidates applying for eligibility to sit for the ARE must establish an NCARB record prior to being permitted to take the exam. Contact NCARB directly and request they notify the Board when you have established your record. Otherwise, your eligibility may be delayed. The contact number for NCARB is (202) 783-6500. 

Upon receiving these indicated items the Board performs an eligibility evaluation, reviews transcripts and Employment Verification Forms to determine the appropriate amount of credit to be granted according to the Table of Equivalents.
